Colin Taylor: A Short Walk in the Big Landscape
An exhibition of paintings by Colin Taylor that maintain a unique dialogue with both literature and history. Described as a visual representation of Burke's the sublime and the beautiful, Taylor's work is an artistic enquiry into the emotional reaction created by the environs of the mountains and scapes of the Lake District. Drawing on Thomas West's 'A Guide to the Lakes, in Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire', Colin Taylor revisited the various stations that West described in his highly popular manual and used these as inspiration and a framework for this series of landscapes. The powerful portrayals demonstrate the inspirational force that West attributed to the Lake District when he wrote of the 'inexhaustible source of scenes and images' that they presented.
