PLACED within the intimate surrounds of Manchester's Lass O' Gowrie pub, What colour was her blood? was a captivating play that told the story of a mother and daughter desperately trying to force a relationship after 20 years apart.

The play convincingly portrayed the differing emotions that surface when two forgotten family members meet, causing the audience to empathize with their individual journeys of heartache and hope.

Grace O’Leary and Julie Parton did well to hold the audience's attention throughout, creating an intense and believable atmosphere through no other means than their own talent and professionalism.

Though the play was only 30 minutes long, the unexpected but intriguing twist at the end kept bums firmly in seats as we wished and waited for more.

Hidden gems

Indeed a slight criticism may be that the play finished too soon without exploring the real gritty drama that had been alluded to within Julie's final aside.

Nevertheless, the play was one of Not Part Of's finest and it is credit to the festival for debuting the talent of Manchester's hidden gems that might otherwise have gone unnoted or unseen.

I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and could have easily kept watching for a while longer.
