THERE aren’t many city centre restaurants boasting the longevity of Dimitris. Twenty years in the business of Mediterranean mezes is no mean feat. It could be the great location that makes it so popular for post-work grazing or it could just be that whenever you descend on the sunny setting, you know you’re gearing up for a great time.

It’s informal and fun, from the outside arcade area, with its clever use of lighting and space evoking a Greek taverna-style dining experience, to the crowded bar and subterranean restaurant. Our European friends take pleasure in food, so make sure you’re in share and share alike mode – you could spend hours at Dimitris sampling exotic titbits and getting lost in conversation, not to mention floods of wine. Once seated the evening’s a whirlwind and the ever-bursting table top, a mountain, strangely never too steep to climb.

It’s good to choose a selection of dishes you can enjoy together but you can always opt for a more traditional three-course if you prefer – whichever way the food has long been legendary for proving to the masses that there really is more to the southern European palate than kebabs and pizza. From quick dips to meaty masterpieces, seafood sensations, vegetarian delights, traditional tapas to tapastastic specials, there are also kids’ choices and your ever popular spaghetti and salad options – and it’s not too expensive, which is a real coup for this end of town.

There’s live music and a late bar every weekend, but every night is party night at Dimitris, so don’t expect a ceremonial encounter.
