Some pretty famous faces have passed through The Old Bell Inn over the years – Dick Turpin and Queen Victoria to name just a few. Thankfully, when we popped into the 200-year-old former coaching inn there was no-one waiting to fleece me – just a menu packed with quality food at great prices.

Although Forts Of India has occupied the same stretch of shopping parade since Rubik’s cubes and Reaganomics were in the news, recent developments had brought it to my eye. The sudden closure of Shimla Pinks in Spinningfields has sent the Friday night curry herd into bereaved despair.

Legendary Northern Quarter curry house This & That opened an arm last year in the city centre and lunch-hour corporates have gone wild. By 1pm, a caterpillar of suits with bulging white shirts writhes out of the restaurant’s bare white door, eager for a plateful.

There are many ways to judge an Indian restaurant. Price, of course; atmosphere, obviously; whether they throw in free poppadoms... well, we all appreciate that. My test is to scan the menu to see how many fish dishes they have.

Everyone knows how to cook a good steak – or thinks they do. I’m sure that the majority of dishes sent back to a restaurant kitchen are slices of beef not cooked ‘properly’.
