As the gusts of wind blew leaves into the entrance I was quite glad to find an escape from the wild weather.
But as I took my seat at The Rams Head Inn – a 459-year-old inn which sits more than 1,200ft above sea level – the pleasure in looking out at the rolling Saddleworth moors almost surpassed that of the food.
The Rams Head claims to serve Yorkshire and Lancashire fayre with a contemporary twist. Scanning the menu it certainly fulfils its ambitions with a wide mix of dishes which would satisfy country bumpkins and city slickers alike.
As well as the a la carte menu there is also a daily three-course set menu for £12.99. It was too good to turn down, so I opted for the garlic mushrooms while my partner chose meatballs.
Mixed in a creamy sauce and poured over a crispy crouton the mushrooms were delicious while the three meatballs sat in a chunky tomato sauce got unrivalled feedback.
After toying with a range of main course options, including Sunday roast, homemade beef burger and quiche of the day I chose gratinised Haddock fillet.
A steamy bowl of white fish, potato, carrots and a creamy cheese sauce, the dish was delicious and the ideal comfort food for the Wuthering Heights-esque location.
Over the table my friend enjoyed sea bass fillet served on a pea risotto. It looked picture-perfect and tasted just as good.
Seeing as desert was included we both made room for Eton Mess. The sweet summer strawberries bound in crème fraiche and chewy meringue were the perfect end to a fantastic meal.
Despite choosing the competitively-priced set menu I certainly didn’t feel like I had gone for the cheap option.
All courses were generously-sized and I felt just as though maximum effort had gone into making them regardless of how much money was going into the till. And with a final bill of £33 – including drinks and coffees – both my stomach and purse left equally satisfied.
