Overall: 2/5
KEEPING the Christmas decorations up past the twelfth night is said to be bad luck.
So when we visited Chefology at the Golden Fleece on January 24, I was surprised to see snow spray on the windows and garlands on the walls.
Although it brightened the place up a little, I can’t help but feel maybe a little bit of that bad luck has rubbed off on the business.
Nestled in the Saddleworth village of Denshaw, this 400-year-old inn offers unbroken views of the rolling countryside and would be the perfect place to cosy up after a brisk walk.
It was disappointing then that the atmosphere when we visited was not much warmer than the winter temperature outside. There was no roaring fire – or warm radiator – to keep us warm while we tucked into our meal.
After shrugging off the temptation to put my coat back on, our appetiser – tear and share garlic bread with bacon and cheese (£2.95) – arrived. This was followed up by home-made mince and onion rag pudding on my side of the table (£10.25) and a mixed grill (£15.95) on the other.
The rag pudding was impressive served atop chunky chips and covered in rich gravy. Its only downfall was perhaps the gravy in the pudding and the extra added by the chef did drown the chips a little. A few vegetables on the side would have been a bonus too.
The mixed grill was definitely mixed, in every sense of the word. A hand-made burger was especially tasty and the steak cooked well.
But the sausages looked a little anaemic and the chicken, which was served on a separate plate and wearing a questionable skin of gravy, was also uneaten.
With a final bill of £35.70 I left feeling a little empty. I wanted to love this place. Sadly, I didn’t.
