FOOD festivals seem to be starting earlier and earlier in the year now. They were once crammed into summer and early autumn but such is their popularity that next month sees two worth checking out in our area.

First up is Wigan Food And Drink Festival, which has landed TV chef Antony Worrall Thompson and wine expert Jilly Goolden to head up the 10-day event, which starts on Thursday, March 4.

AWT hosts a four-course dinner at Haigh Hall on Wednesday, March 10, with Goolden giving a masterclass at the same venue two days later.

There is also a Kitchen Theatre in the town’s outdoor market with cookery demonstrations and tastings and a Fine Food Trail with special menus at the festival’s partner restaurants.

The annual Camra beer festival is on from March 4 to 6 and there is a two-day sweet festival on March 12 and 13. Uncle Joe’s Sweet Tooth Fair (named after the famous sticky sweet made in the town) will included chocolate-making demonstrations and lots of high-calorie tastings.

For more information on the festival go to wlct.org/foodanddrink.

AND the sweet toothed among us will also be pleased to hear that the successful Ramsbottom Chocolate Festival returns, on March 27 and 28.

There will be a Chocolate Market, children’s craft workshop, a world record attempt at eating Ferrero Rocher chocolates and special menus from restaurants featured in the town’s already- established Chocolate Trail.

ONE of Taste Real Food Cheshire’s first events of the year sounds like it should be part of Wigan’s food festival.

Expert piemaker Simon Roberts, who makes his bespoke pastry creations in Nantwich, is serving up a Gourmet Pies Supper And Tasting at Knutsford Civic Hall next Saturday, February 13, at 8pm.

The price for the three-course meal is £20 or £15 for members.
