Battle of the Jam
AS part of the celebrations for the first ever National Jam Week, its founder Clippy’s Apples from Sale, hosted a ‘battle of the jam butty’ at Harvey Nichols in Manchester earlier this week.
Abandonding haute-culinary pretentions, a noble team of celebrity chefs took part in the sillineness including David Gale (Hilton Manchester Deansgate), Andrew Nutter (of Nutters) and Harvey Nichols’ Stuart Thomson, battled it out to see who could make the tallest jam sandwich in under two minutes.
The winner was David Gale with an impressive 13inch sandwich!
Michelle McKenna, founder of the Clippy’s Apples brand who specialise in British apple based jams, jellies and chutneys, established National Jam Week (June 21-28, 2009) to help put ‘proper’ jam back on the British menu.
McKenna adjudicated the ‘Jam Butty Battle’, which took place in the Harvey Nichols Foodmarket.
“This is the first ever National Jam Week and this is a great way to celebrate…Jam reminds us of our childhoods, playing out in the sunshine with jam butties and mucky elbows. I’m talking about ‘proper’ jam of course, not the cheap, sugary stuff that is often found these days…This is an exciting week for us and as a finalist in the Food Northwest Awards 2009 we have plenty to celebrate.”
