Champagne - sales go flat

THE bubble has finally burst – with news that champagne sales in Britain are plummeting.

One of the country’s leading wine merchants, Majestic,  reported today that profits were down after champagne sales had fallen by nearly 6.5 per cent.

Drinkers are abandoning the traditional fizz in favour of cheaper alternatives, according to Majestic .

“ Customers have not had much to celebrate over the last six months”, said Steve Lewis, chief executive of Majestic.

“ Business customers have not been doing as much entertaining and when times are tough people do not want to be seen drinking champagne”.

Production costs in France have increased by 4 per cent  sand exports to champagne’s biggest markets in the UK, America, Japan and Germany are down by as much as 17 per cent

Despite all this gloom, CityLife.co.uk will still be offering its Christmas bubbly recommendatiions in December

Meanwhile her is an affordable Aussie alternative, made by the champagne method to brighten the gloom

Griffith Park hit the headlines last year when its sparkling rose scooped gold in the International Sparkling wine Competition – Effervescents du Monde - placing the wine among the top 10 sparkling wines of the world .

It's not that good, but it is amazing value. Currently Griffth Park sparkling rose and sparkling brut are on introductory promotion in ASDA at £5, the sparkling rose is on promotion at Morrisons for £5.99 and in selected Tesco stores at the normal recommended retail price of £6.99.
