Spinningfields - the new Venice

BOLOGNESE sauce on your Armani suit, sir? The swish Avenue retail/restaurant complex going up in Spinningfields could well get a branch of Jamie Oliver’s new Italian eaterie chain.

But don’t expect those chianti bottles in wicker baskets or waiters wielding giant pepper pots singing O Sole Mio – Jamie’s Kitchen aims to be authentic and cool.

Designer label hunting diners will be able to pukka up by ordering Jamie’s Flash Steak and My Rustic Lasagne – evidence of what the Observer critic Jay Rayner described as ‘Brand Jamie’ when he reviewed (not uncritically) the Oxford High Street original.

Italian eateries

This has spawned branches in Kingston upon Thames and Bath with further openings planned for Cardiff, Brighton and Cambridge.

Now my Spinningfield mole tells me the Essex One is in discussions with developers Allied London for Spinningfields, which is already rammed with Italian eateries such as Carluccio’s, Strada and Zizzi with Pesto and San Carlo nearby. Ciao, matey.
