Overall: 3/5
TOGETHER with Alderley Edge and Prestbury, Wilmslow completes south Manchester’s ‘golden triangle’, where supposedly you can find more champagne flowing and more millionaires per square mile than anywhere else in the country.
The last decade has seen a constantly evolving late night bar scene in Wilmslow, the most vibrant of the trio, where an oversubscribed market has encouraged fierce competition to become the place of the moment.
Tighter security, inflated prices, more glamorous interiors and the increasing influence of cocktail culture have gradually shaped a more upmarket scene.
New town centre bar and restaurant Boca is one such venue driving the trend.
Launched by Ben Oakley and former Brasingamens boss Ashley Brown, the venue is slick and funky with a feminine edge.
High ceilings and architectural features heighten the drama of disco mirror-flecked pillars, gold sparkly walls, monochrome portraits, and retro red and white furniture.
A wide range of premium drinks includes best-seller Peroni, Stella and Boddingtons on tap, classic and champagne cocktails, and vodka bigwigs Belvedere, Grey Goose and Skyy.
Champagne bottoms at Perrier-Jouët Grand Brut NV (£45) and peaks at Ace of Spades Rose (£495), new favourite for stars JayZ and Leonardo di Caprio.
The premises have been persistently reinvented in the past, from Bank Square, to Waverley’s to Chapters, and has struggled to shed its townie reputation.
Boca will have to fight its corner to pull in the crowds, but it has all the right ingredients for success.
4 Bank Square, Wilmslow, SK9 1AN (01625 530 880).
