DELIGHTED locals at a Salford pub have saved their boozer – by buying it.

The Star Inn, Broughton, went at auction for £80,000 to a local consortium after it was put up for sale by brewery Robinsons.

GP Tim Worden, one of the six directors of the new company, said: “In just three weeks the community has banded together and pledged enough money.

“It’s a great pub. We didn’t want to see it closed down.”

The award-winning pub – which is in a conservation area – dates back to the 1860s and is described by real ale group Camra as ‘a hidden gem’.
