A WIGAN pub is celebrating winning a local award with a special weekend celebrating the town’s beers.

The Crown At Worthington has been named Pub of the Year by the Wigan branch of the Campaign for Real Ale, for the third time in four years.

The freehouse won the award outright in 2006 and was the joint winner with The Anvil, in Wigan town centre, last year.

The pub, which has been run by Daniel and Tracy Prince for five years, prides itself on its real ale - with six or seven guest beers - and its continental bottled beer selection.

Quality

Wigan Camra chairman Ken Worthington said: “The Crown serves good quality real ales. There is always a good choice of beers and they do good food, too. Daniel and Tracy are always holding festivals and are always keen to promote real ale.”

Runner-up this year was the Masons Arms, at Billinge, which also scooped the Community Pub of the Year Award.

The Crown, which was nominated in the pubs section of the CityLife Manchester Food And Drink Festival awards, regularly holds themed beer weekends and this Bank Holiday weekend (May 22 to May 25) the pub is showcasing 13 beers produced by Wigan micro-breweries.

It is now the official brewery tap for award-winning Standish micro Prospect, with 10 beers from the brewery, and three from Allgates, including the dark Porteresque, which is due to be stocked in bottles by Sainsbury supermarkets.

The Prospect brews include Toothpick, Big Adventure and the session ale Silver Tally (a particular CityLife favourite).

Butchers

The brewery and The Crown’s head chef Beccy Foster have teamed up with local butchers, Browns of Chorley, to produce three special handmade sausages using Prospect beers and they will be available all weekend.

The weekend culminates in a family barbecue and funday at the pub on Bank Holiday Monday with a bouncy castle, assault course and bungee run for children.
