Acts to watch in 2008

Santogold's album is so diverse that it pretty much puts everyone else in the shade. True classic album in the making. She delivers the goods live too which surely must mean this girl's in for some awards in the near future.

Briton's Protection out of Good Beer Guide 2009

Top boozer and I'm sure this won't affect it's trade that much. It's already a stalwart on the tried and tested boozer trail in town.

Cask

A slice of Northern Quarter on the other side of town. Great bar but no where near big enough. Good beer garden though and the juke box is for the hardcore mancunian.

Deansgate

Since it's relaunch it's been a great addition to the quieter end of Deansgate. Really nicely laid out and with it's classic interior it'll never get dated. The drinks are a little on the pricey side, but that's more to do with it's vicinity to the Hilton. Staff are friendly and efficient and you never have to wait too long to be served. Crackin terrace area too.

Glasvegas plan Christmas album

Gutted I'm gonna miss both of these dates. That is a top album and great to hear someone singing in a proper glasgow accent. Set them apart from most of the regular indie crowd and the wall of sound stuff gives it real presence.

Massive Attack

The only thing missing was the weather. That could be the one comment to detract from a fantastic show. Great Music, flawless vocals, exhilarating visuals and a fantastic venue all for gratis. This is the third time I've seen Massive attack, but the first since Mushroom left. I was worried that with a set heavy with new, unreleased tracks this may be a stagnant affair but the new stuff worked well among the classics even if they weren't quite up to the same calibre. It certainly is a leap forward from the durge of 100th Window was gratefully ignored throughout the set. Becks did a great job of setting the venue out perfectly and a notable absence of scally's made it a more comfortable affair. It would be brilliant if Manchester had something like this each year that would fill the gap left by d-percussion. Especially when it brings along such a great list of acts.

Mother Mac's

If you like your pubs rough and ready then this is the place for you. I recently visited this place with an old friend who hadn't been to Manchester in years. He instantly fell in love with the place as it's a great example of what all pubs used to be like before Manchester had it's extensive make over. I remember my Dad taking me into many pubs just like this as I grew up and although it's good to embrace the modern, it'll always be necessary to have at least some souvenirs from these era. Beer, atmosphere and general friendliness are all on tap here.

Review: EastzEast

I ate here on saturday and was very, very impressed by it. Granted it's not usual to find a top notch restaurant under a budget hotel and on that side of town but it knocked spots off contemporaries like "Shimla Pinks". I also have a nut allergy and they were all well informed as too which dishes to avoid. Would definitely take friends here again and recommend it for anyone who is fed up of Rusholme.

Sams Chop House

A stalwart of Manchester pub culture. An original Gastro pub before that term meant brewers fayre. A combination of beautiful surroundings, good food, great beer and fantastic staff make it a must see on any decent pub crawl. If you're lucky enough to get a seat then you'll probably stay the whole night.

Thomson looking forward to contest

I truly hope this will mean Thomson will get back to his Stand Up roots. He's a fantastic talent and it'll be good to see him on stage again. He always gave Coogan a run for his money.
