Indie club night of the week: Now Wave
MIDWEEK MAGIC: The Now Wave DJsYOUNG guns indeed. Now Wave aren't so much the new kids on the block, as the trendy club kids who turned up out of nowhere, demolished the block, and then rebuilt it with dazzling futuristic indie colours.
Only in existence for two months, Now Wave is fast becoming Manchester's essential mid-week indie/alternative haven; owing its success to a stellar venue (CityLife's bar of the year Deaf Institute), and off-beam indie acts who aren't afraid to be daring, adventurous and provocative (Holy F*ck, Ipso Facto, Joy Formidable).
Plus, the fact that it's on a Wednesday makes it all the more enticing for those midweek hedonists amongst you.
"We're not interested in nazal gazing," insist the Now Wave team. "We just want to provide a bloody good night out, free from cheap nostalgia. The focus is all on brand new music."
HMM, CLUBBING ON A SCHOOLNIGHT. WHY SHOULDN'T I JUST STAY IN AND WATCH THAT SEX AND THE CITY BOXSET?
Because if you care even a jot about new alternative music, then Now Wave is THE clubnight destination for you. Committed to showcasing 'the sounds of the near future', Now Wave have bagged exclusive Manchester performances from the likes of Joy Formidable, Those Dancing Days, S.C.U.M and Ipso Facto – basically anyone who's hot in indie hipster land right now. After the bands finish, the Now Wave team set the (sticky) dancefloor alight with their legendary, genre-bending DJ sets.
ARE THE DJs REALLY THAT GOOD?
Absolutely. With a playlist that bounces from obscure remixes to punk funk to electro-pop, it's a dancefloor selection that brilliantly balances eclecticism with real dancefloor hysteria. Visit the Now Wave MySpace page, and you can even download exclusive monthly playlist compilations.
OKAY. COUNT ME IN! WEDNESDAYS ARE THE NEW FRIDAYS! WHEN'S THEIR NEXT EVENT THEN?
Erm, that'd be this Wednesday (November 12), where you can catch sets from We Have Band and Darlings Of The Splitscreen. The real biggie though, is in two weeks (November 26) when Now Wave host an exclusive set from hotly-tipped disco-pop queen Little Boots. Probably a good idea to book your Thursday mornings off work from now on.
