BIRTHDAY BASH: Revellers at Spektrum

LIKE no other night in the city Micron represents clubbing rebooted and made good again in 2008.

Celebrating its second birthday on Friday at Spektrum (above Sankeys) promoter Gaz Chubb explains to CityLife exactly how something so intimate became such a phenomenon.

“We did what all the best clubs do – we invited all our friends down and had a party,” he says.

“There was a collective of about five of us and we called in all our favours amongst our mates and even by the first event at Joshua Brooks we’d managed to sell out.”

There was a time not long ago when techno and house was the domain of the head-nodding, slightly serious record collector types that fawned over effortless mixes by the likes of Jeff Mills and Richie Hawtin.

Nothing wrong with that, you might argue, but it was all a bit… male.

Then a new generation of house, techno heads brought electronic music back through nights such as Naïve Melody, Tribal Sessions and of course Micron.

“We’re all about the small night where the residents are really good,” laughs Gaz.

“We’re not geeky techno types though we love our music. Our people come down to dress up, dance and have a good time. We get loads of girls coming down who want to hear the music as opposed to just record collector types.”

Special guest at Friday’s birthday is James Priestley from Secretsundaze, a club that’s similarly made a big reputation from small beginnings.

Reputation

A legendary Sunday session originally started in Cambridge, the night quickly picked up a reputation for its dedicated following and scant regard for Monday morning.

Since those days Priestly has gone on to play at We Love Sunday in Ibiza, Cocoon in London and a host of other clubs from Rio De Janiero to Berlin.

Making its name in the intimate surroundings of Joshua Brooks, moving venue to Spektrum naturally came with some revelations for the Micron gang.

“It’s always a risk to move venue just in case you lose that vibe,” says Gaz.

“But we always had a plan so we stuck to it. There was no way we could just start a new weekend night so we planned to start a small Thursday, build it up and then take the leap. So far it seems to have worked.”

Indeed. So much so that DJ Mag has just nominated it for Best Small Club in the UK. The plan, it would seem, is working.

Micron’s recommended 10:

1. Duoteque - Adyra
2. Fix - Flash
3. Roman S - Horn (Pig & Dan Remix)
4. Extrawelt - Soopertrack
5. Argy - Love Dose (Luciano Remix)
6. Polder - Topdrop
7. Johnny D - Point Of View
8. Sascha Dive - RDS Movement (Randy Watson Remix)
9. Christian Burkhardt - Contempoprary Box
10. Robert Owens - Happy (James Priestley & Dan Berkson's Remix).

Micron’s second birthday takes place at Spektrum on Friday, November 14.
