DJ SPOT: Lovefoxx

GETTING one of the hippest dancefloor crossover acts in music to come and DJ at your night surely must take some cool friends in high places.

That’s what CityLife thought when presented with the fact that Lovefoxx, from Brazilian outfit CSS, is set to DJ at Clique on Friday.

Not so, according to Ian and Damien from the respected night. “We emailed her directly, believe it or not, and she replied to say she’d love to!” they explain. “It was as simple as that.”

So there you have it – a faint heart never won a fair lady. Even in the world of nightclubs.

Clique has become one of the city’s hottest nightclubs over the last three years. Moving from its original basement location at Jabez Clegg, just a few months ago the club has gone from strength to strength, playing streetwise electro pop for a young, sharp-dressed crowd.

Now taking place twice a month, the night regularly gets a capacity crowd thanks to the duo’s canny and cool electro pop selections.

But even more than that, in a city more renowned for its bloke rock than androgynous pop, Clique is getting profiled by style mags all over the world, noting its fresh approach and ultra-hip crowd.

To many, Clique represents Year Zero in the next generation’s clubbing calendar.

And, if you add the lead singer of CSS into the mix for an evening, you’re set for a night that’s going to sell out rather too soon for many at the back of the queue.

Black Kids

Heartsrevolution, Black Kids, La Roux, Pnau, recent Teenagers remixes, The Shoes, Ladyhawke and some of the new disco-influenced sounds out there have all informed Clique playlists of late.

A recent mix CD given out at their parties shows that, even while being dancefloor friendly, the Clique DJs never lose their love of pop.

“Anything that improves the experience of the night works for us,” says Ian on the move to the larger Mint Lounge in the Northern Quarter.

“What makes it more special for the kids who come is what matters. Mint Lounge is a gorgeous, fantastically well looked after venue. It’s been great to be able to go to playing there twice a month.”

With success comes imitation and there have been a few nights sprung up in the city in recent times that have more than a passing resemblance to the popular club.

Are Ian and Damien bothered by this form of flattery?

“We just concentrate on Clique,” they say, “too busy to notice what’s happening outside. We’re just in love with music and clubbing and good times.

“We try to find new songs, sounds, ideas that excite us and hope they excite the kids. Excitement is the reason we’re doing Clique – it’s an attempt to do omething special.”

Friday night is certainly going to be special. But only if you get in before the closed doors announce a sell-out.
