Lykke Li
Academy, Manchester
October 31, 2011
SWEDISH songstress Lykke Li, while still only 25, is almost a veteran of the stage, having first burst onto the music scene three years ago with her quirky and off-kilter sound.
And she seems to command more of your attention as she develops as an artist, such as the gentle new direction of her second album, Wounded Rhymes, released earlier this year. The new tracks feature a five-piece band which allows her distinctive voice to leap.
Driven by almost tribal drumming and a clock-like beat, the tone changes with livelier numbers, including the always-infectious Little Bit.
Lykke also adds an air of uneasiness to her show – she baits the audience to stop filming and leave YouTube behind for one night.
At 25 I imagine there’s a lot more to come. And that’s good news for everybody.
