Slava's Snowshow
The Lowry, Salford Quays
October 21, 2011
I WAS sceptical as to whether taking clowns out of the big top and onto the stage would work but Slava’s Snow Show is certainly a sight to behold.
The Russian clown Slava Polunin’s international multi-award winning show is nothing you have ever seen before.
A bare set and a troupe of shabby clowns is all it takes to free your imagination and transport you into a snowy dream world.
Slava’s clowns are not your usual red-nosed funny men from the circus with their slapstick comedy capers but somehow stranger, darker, and yet so captivating.
You can really understand at times where some people’s fears of clowns stem from after watching Slava’s clowns. From lead clown Asisiai’s first entrance with a noose around his neck to eerie black winged clowns and spooky rocking horses – dark, yes, but also completely stunning, mystical and magical.
Their haunting beauty and ethereal presence lingers throughout as the surreal dreamscapes, which make up the entirety of the show, flow into one another.
The separate skits feel a bit disjointed and don’t necessarily make sense but somehow, like a dream, they don’t always need to. Through the mimed clownery you experience love, melancholy and adventure but also comic tragedy, loneliness and sorrow.
And the amazing finale has to be seen to be believed.
