Kro Bar
Oxford Road
October 2010

Back in 2000, Kro Bar on Oxford Road clinched CityLife’s title for best bar a year after it launched.

The independently-run café bar had a winning combination of a wide selection of beers, good value food and a welcoming atmosphere – all underpinned by some solid Danish hospitality heritage in the form of the Ruby family.

The operators have since opened a further five venues (Kro 2, Kro Piccadilly, Kro Old Abbey Inn, Kro Heaton Moor and Kro Trafford Centre) to become one of Manchester’s most influential late-night businesses.

In the same ilk, as the expanding Odd, Odder, Oddest empire, Kro has never strayed from its core strengths, but its bars vary in crowd and sophistication.

Of all six outlets Kro Bar is the one that will orientate the recently returned students and pre-gig crowds – its front tables beckon over the road to the Student’s Union and Manchester Academy.

A decade of constant footfall means it doesn’t have the modern, clean cut look of its Piccadilly counterpart, but it does boast one of the city’s best enclosed beer gardens; the perfect place to enjoy one of their best-selling Danish draught beers like Fynsk Forar or Dark Horse.

The new membership card (£3) is a great way to pick up offers like 2-4-1 Mojitos, house wine for £9 and rotational food offers.

But some closing advice for Kro Bar itself: remember that toilet checks are badly needed throughout the night!
