Faulty Towers the Dining Experience

Faulty Towers – The Dining Experience
The Lowry
September 6, 2010

The thought of interactive theatre often splits audiences into those who love the chance to take centre stage and others who avoid eye contact and cower wishing they were invisible.

There is no escaping attention in Faulty Towers – The Dining Experience. But whatever camp you fall into, the interaction is pitched perfectly to make everyone feel involved rather than picked on.

It’s worth arriving in time for a drink beforehand because Basil is already in full-swing, manically striding up and down the bar and checking everyone is OK. It’s more of a command than a question.

Dinner is served in the Lowry’s Compass Room. Guests sit on tables of 10, making for great camaraderie from the off. Everything that can go wrong does: wrong cutlery, late dishes, false teeth in the soup and an escaped rat.

The pandemonium which ensues is carefully constructed. Michael Davoren is a superb Basil, hilariously rude, henpecked and comic-book violent with spectacular high leg kicks.

Daley Donnelly is convincingly confused as Spanish waiter Manuel. The evening is full of surprises and it is this element of the unexpected which makes it such fun.

Among the chaos, real waiting staff do a splendid job.

There is a good reason why Interactive Theatre Australia has been selling out this show for more than a decade. For an all-round entertaining evening, you can’t beat it.

Until September 19, 2010.
