Reeling
Reeling
24:7 Theatre Festival 2010: New Century House
July 26, 2010
Reeling is an intriguing work during which two sisters, mourning the death of their mother, relive moments from their past when they accidentally discover reels of cassette tape in a neighbour's trunk.
To their horror they discover that every room in their house has been bugged for years and as they haphazardly listen to excerpts they piece together not only their respective histories but also learn some surprising facts about their dead mother.
After the initial shock they begin to play about with the tapes seeking solace and eventually redemption.
It's performed by Joanne Smart, who plays Jude and also produces. A graduate in performing arts from Salford University, she also taught there while studying for her Masters.
Louise-Clare Henry, a graduate from drama school in Manchester, who has worked with the Manchester Actors Company and LipService, plays her sister Alice.
Produced by Piece of Work Theatre Company for the 24.7 Festival, Reeling comes with terrific credentials.
It's written by Sean Gregory who graduated in creative writing at Salford University and is currently finishing his Masters degree in screenwriting at the prestigious University of East Anglia. During that time he's written several plays.
It's directed by award-winning Richard Vergette who made such an impression at the festival three years ago with his own play An Englishman's home which transferred to the Library Theatre as part of the RePlay Festival.
Last year he wrote and performed in As We Forgive Them another fine award-winning production. Currently he is a co-director of Ensemble 52, now one of the resident theatre companies at Studio Salford
Reeling is a fine piece of writing which only last an hour. You can see it as part of the 24.7 Festival until the end of this week.
The 24:7 Theatre Festival runs until August 1 at New Century House, Manchester. Check www.247theatrefestival.co.uk for listings and times.
