No View From The Window

No View From The Window
24:7 Theatre Festival 2010: Elphick Stage
July 26, 2010

Continuing Manchester’s long tradition of creative writing, No View is an hour-long play co-written, co-produced and performed by Rebecca Mahon.

It is a fascinating look at the life of a woman who appears to have a fixation with her bathroom – mainly, as we discover, because it’s so small and has no view.

We first see Louisa curled around her bath, then watch her wildly waving a fish-slice about. Has she temporarily lost the plot because it’s her mother’s funeral or is she actually quite mad?

This endlessly gripping work is skilfully directed by Kim Gillespie, who also co-wrote this brief piece, which benefits from sound effects and original music.

Both co-writers are to be congratulated on the quality of this work, which is, in turn, dramatic, poignant and surprisingly funny.

You don’t feel like Rebecca Mahon is acting the role because she speaks from the heart, looking directly at the audience. It’s a rare gift that many experienced actors don’t possess.

Incidentally you can currently see Rebecca on the television advert for a certain slimming wafer and she’ll appear as Annika in Doctors on September 22.

But don’t miss her in No View From The Window.

The 24:7 Theatre Festival runs until August 1 at New Century House, Manchester. Check www.247theatrefestival.co.uk for listings and times.
