24:7 Theatre Festival 2010: Pioneer Stage
July 26, 2010
A ballerina pops out of a box and dances around. It’s her birthday and she wants to celebrate like most little girls - but it’s her 29th birthday and she’s stuck at the age of four.
In her imagination she has a playmate, who makes his annual visit, dressed as a jockey, to share in the fun.
You can see what writer-actors Sally Lawton and Luke Walker are getting at. In an original brave way, they set out to explore the world of the child who never grows up.
The pair deserve credit for putting a lot of energy and physicality into their performance, but the script is just not comic enough and two grown-ups behaving like children struck me as just silly, I’m afraid.
The 24:7 Theatre Festival runs until August 1 at New Century House, Manchester. Check www.247theatrefestival.co.uk for listings and times.
