Pink
Pink
Reebok Stadium, Bolton
June 12, 2010
As 11 Americans and Rob Green conspired to bring disappointment to the nation on Saturday night, there was at least one person from the other side of the Atlantic determined to spread happiness among a small portion of the English public.
Pink, on what must be the 4,000th leg of her Carnival world tour, even showed her commitment by giving the thousands of reluctant husbands and boyfriends gathered here match updates as events between England and the USA unfolded in Rustenburg.
“I don’t even know the rules, but I know we’ve got a point,” laughed the singer at half time, making her analysis at least seven times more insightful than that offered by most of the pundits and that big chap with the vuvuzela on ITV.
Musically, there was much focus on Pink’s recent rockier albums, with the opening Funhouse setting the tone for the lip-snarling, ass-kicking grrrl pop blast to follow.
The all-American carnival stage set invokes memories of classic rock stadium shows of yore and made for an unfussy change in a world where
Lady Gaga is busy redefining arena gigs with the phantasmagoria of the opera, turning each set into a sensory assault.
Pink has chosen a funfair theme for her latest world tour, and she is a master of stagecraft.
All the trademarks are here: running around the place in a leotard, walking across the audience in a giant inflatable ball, the now-obligatory swinging from a red bedsheet. All backed up by the strongest and best voice in pop.
More could have been made of the singer’s classic M!ssundaztood disc – only Just Like A Pill gets a run-out.
But, with every great single from the last five years, including U + Ur Hand, Leave Me Alone (I’m Lonely) and the mercurial So What (which is saved for a special encore featuring the star belting out the break-up classic while flying, Peter Pan-style, around the stadium), you could hardly feel short-changed.
As news of the England result filtered through courtesy of the Pink Score Service, the consolation of having seen one of the best performers of our generation on top form at least partially made up for it.
