"We want you to be a member of our band..." says Scouting For Girls’ frontman Roy Stride, "...and this is your audition".
Within minutes of appearing he and his band mates Greg Churchouse and Peter Ellard had the crowd singing along to Heartbeat – just one of the old favourites played from their first self-titled album.
Next up was Little Miss Naughty - the first song from their new album Everyone Wants To be On TV - and if the screams were anything to go by, they have fulfilled their aim of not coming back with a ‘rubbish’ second album.
As Roy made his way to the piano we prepared for a bums-on-seats moment. But, as with most of the indie-pop band’s light-hearted and uplifting melodies, we should have known better and within seconds everyone was back on their feet for James Bond.
"So you can sing," shouted Roy, "but can you dance? And can you jump?"
The vibrating floor gave him his sought-after answer to that one as the delighted audience bounced around to Good Time Girl, The Airplane Song, I Need A Holiday and Famous.
Michaela Strachan photos were the backdrop as they performed the secret track from their first album, detailing Stride’s schoolboy crush on ‘The Strachan’.
But the highlight was definitely Roy’s energetic run into the balcony and back as he got the crowd chanting ‘Elvis isn’t dead, Elvis isn’t dead…’.
They may not have had the most fantastic set and there were certainly no costume changes for this boy band – unless you count Roy throwing his denim jacket into the crowd – but when you’re talented enough to write your own songs, play your own instruments and put on fantastic crowd-jumping performance – what else do you need?
