Airbourne
Airbourne
Apollo
April 3, 2010
For a moment on Saturday night I thought I’d nodded off in front of the TV and woken up in an episode of the latest series of Ashes To Ashes.
No wait, there are camera phones in the room, they didn’t have them in 1983…
The early Eighties it may not be but it there is little doubt that Aussie rockers Airbourne’s style of rock definitely belongs to the era – there’s more than just a nod towards the likes of AC/DC here.
With synchronised headbanging, beer can throwing and the frontman’s bare-chested shenanigans (still, nice six pack mind), it’s hard to take it seriously.
There have been so many parodies since the heyday of rawk – from Spinal Tap to The Darkness’s spandex-clad postmodern take; and even Peter Kay (you know, his impression of that thing you do at weddings when you slide along on your knees), this sort of behaviour has been lampooned aplenty.
But there must be something in it – Airbourne are playing to a respectably-sized crowd at the Apollo and are on a world tour.
Perhaps the success lies in the fact that they really do go for it – the energy level doesn’t drop once.
Nor does the T-shirt go on not even when front man Joel O’Keeffe heads into the crowd, out the back of the stalls and on to the balcony all while still playing lead guitar. Who says guys can’t multi-task?
It is hard not to get drawn in by events and maybe there is just a touch of knowing tongue cheek probing here after all.
