MEN Arena
March 12, 2010

Jenkins is the latest in a long line of singers to bridge the gap between classical and popular music - and, with the looks to go along with the incredible voice and the sweet-girl-from-the-valleys demeanour, it’s no wonder she’s become so popular.

So here she is on her first solo arena tour and she’s certainly giving people their money’s worth - there are dancers in quirky, bucolic outfits, much flying about in the air against dramatic backdrops and two special guests – French tenor Amaury Vassili and her all girl string quartet support act Escala join her on stage.

Plus there’s a myriad of costume changes. Though it has to be said that there’s a touch of the drag queen to Jenkins first two outfits - all big hair and cantilevered bosom, but thankfully her natural beauty is in evidence in the rest of the show with partially tamed tresses and slimmed down dresses.

Classical versions of other genres’ best know tunes can be tricky to pull off but there are only a couple of bum notes in the set. Bob Marley’s No Woman No Cry was best left alone and sadly La Vie En Rose loses its magic without Piaf’s throaty rasp.

However, elsewhere all is good. Jenkins chooses well in her latest album Believe, a repertoire of well known opera, show tunes and dramatic pop songs.

The highlights though lie in the classical sections of the show, which reveal a beautifully dramatic rendition of the sung version of Adagio and Habanera from Bizet’s Carmen is whirl of swirling Spanish gypsies.

In the main the theatrics are impressive, adding to the sense of show. Sarah McLachlan’s Angel is accompanied by a flying man in his jim jams pulling Jenkins into the air with him – the girl’s certainly game. Though later the acrobatic theatrics that accompany Queen’s Who Wants To Live Forever become a touch cheesy.

It’s a sassy, sexy showcase of a singer thoroughly enjoying her prime. And so she should.
