Chris Addison: The Time is Now, Again
Chris Addison
Middleton Arena
February 14, 2010
Chris Addison treats his audience as if they are friends, which is why several rows found themselves munching on sandwiches during the second half of his show at Middleton Arena.
The Worsley comic had been talking about the ridiculous ‘riders’ some stars can have before making an appearance - “I don’t care, I’ll get a ham sandwich from Tesco Express” - before he brought out from the wings the two platters of sandwiches the 'lovely people' from the arena had left in his dressing room, and, leaping from the stage, instructed people to pass them on.
The former CityLife Comedian Of The Year - who is more recently known for TV’s In The Thick Of It, Lab Rats and various panel shows - was energetic throughout. His gangly frame bounded on to the stage and was the butt of a lot of his jokes, as he recalled his days at Manchester Grammar School when he was among those pupils who didn’t get picked for cricket and, as an adult, his efforts to join a gym.
“My body isn’t made for anything physical”, he quipped, before going on to describe his attempts in the bedroom when he would rather just watch Cranford.
The second half covered more contentious issues like the Catholic church and the BNP, before moving on to how ‘woefully unprepared’ we were for the recent snow, as he described middle class neighbours wrapping up their kids 'like Russian dolls' and handing out the Kendal mint cake.
There was something for everyone and he even invited audience questions during the encore, when he recalled his first ever gig at the Frog and Bucket.
He’s back in the area at The Lowry in March 2010.
