Town Cafe Bar
Town Cafe Bar
Heaton Moor
January 2010
Overall: 4/5
TOWN Cafe Bar has arguably been the place for drinking in Heaton Moor among the young professional crowd for more than four years. With people spilling out onto the front roadside smoking terrace each weekend, it was a good decision to extend into a first floor space just before Christmas.
Operators and partners Jo Hughes and Peter Sherlock launched the independent business to embellish their creative sides, after being made redundant from a newspaper. Designed by Peter, the bar has the warm and fashionable feel of a bedroom-esque boudoir.
Feminine furnishings (table lamps, candles, gilded mirrors, black chandeliers, quirky artwork and zebra print cushions) complement a textured backdrop of exposed brick, ornate wallpaper and tones of black and red.
The combination of chilled daytime music and party tunes at night, along with continental-style food (based around cheap snacky-style tapas, sandwiches and imaginative mains) and middle-ground drinks, make for a powerful formula throughout the day. There’s a wide selection of wines, beers and vodkas, which features the elegantly bottled Vodka Kauffman and rose petal-infused Pinky brand.
So what does the extension add to the place? The downstairs has been opened up with the removal of a wall and a new staircase, which leads to the 60-seater ‘Up-Town’ area; an even cosier place to lounge with sofas, seats and stools, monoprint curtains and plenty of homely décor. There’s hope of a new bar up there soon, too.
