Reginald D Hunter: The Only Apple In The Garden Of Eden And N****s

Reginald D Hunter
The Lowry
November 4, 2009

AFTER some impressive turns on TV quiz show favourites such as QI and Have I Got News For You, Reg Hunter is slowly becoming something of a household name.

The endearing American is the first to admit, however, that anyone who has only ever seen him on those shows before may be in for a shock tonight. The trademark laid-back, Southern style is present and correct as ever, but the vast majority of Reg’s show would most certainly be deemed unfit for air on the dear old Beeb.

Having lived over here in the UK for 10 years now, a large portion of Reg’s material centres upon his observations about the British. He wryly notes that us Brits, ‘drink the way Americans eat’ and according to what he sees on daytime TV, our main hobbies appear to be gourmet food and finding stuff in our attic.

You get the sense that he truly has a great affinity with the UK and its little quirks, and his takes on our society contrasted nicely with tales from his home state of Georgia.

Unique style

The homespun wisdom of Reg’s dad is the source of much amusement, especially when he regales us with the time his dad first talked to him about sex when he was only 15, in particularly graphic detail.

Another topic that gets plenty of coverage is the so called battle of the sexes, and on these matters, Reg is not afraid to call on his own personal experiences with the ladies in order to entertain. Frank and to the point, you leave a Reg Hunter show feeling like you now know him intimately.

His example of a personal story not to tell in front of possible prospective in-laws is a real set highlight.

Reg’s naturally relaxed persona has gifted him a unique style of delivery. At times you think he is rambling and wandering too far off topic, only for him to pull it back round at the last minute with a brilliantly incisive comment.

Anyone who has enjoyed his TV appearances would be strongly advised to catch him on tour.
