DARK and brooding, Editors are positioning themselves as heirs apparent to the gloomy indie crown long vacated by the likes of Joy Divison.

New album In This Light And On This Evening is a clear progression as their sound becomes focused upon pulsating synths at the expense of driving guitars.

The band oozed confidence and with an elaborate light show and almost ethereal stage presence, they are evolving into fully fledged rock stars.

However, based on the evidence of this show it may be a case of too much too soon as most of their new material was met with a lacklustre response.

Noticeable lull

Tracks from debut album The Back Room, such as Lights and Bullets were met with rapturous, arms-aloft singalongs, and tracks from second release An End Has A Start truly raised the roof.

Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors and the album’s title track both showcased the band at their best with screeching guitars soaring behind Tom Smith’s bruised baritone.

Unfortunately, there is a noticeable lull when new tracks are brought out, and much of the new album did seem to blend into one.

Obviously these songs are still a little unknown, and in time perhaps they will become as popular as their predecessors. But the epic melancholy fell flat here and, bar new single Papillon, struggled to leave much of an impression.
