Dry Bar
Dry Bar
Northern Quarter
October 2009
CRITICS accuse Dry Bar of living off past history and even the original designer, famed Hacienda architect Ben Kelly, has told the media he wishes it had been demolished.
But the fact remains that Dry Bar has strolled into its 20th year with big refurbishment plans and a Mancunian swagger in its stride.
First opened by Factory Records and New Order, Dry 201 set a precedence for bar culture in the Northern Quarter, functioning as a pre-drinks destination for the Hacienda crowd and bridging the pub/club divide.
Students and musos can still be heard swapping folklore tales within its walls. If you shed the rose-tinted specs, Dry Bar still has a strong identity for great bands, weekend DJs, a laid-back vibe and a healthy selection of inexpensive drinks.
Seductive new look
The Oldham Road frontage, which is people-watching perfection, leads into a cavernous, factory-like floor, with a back outdoor seating area.
Steel framework, a long slate bar top, and black and yellow paintwork hint towards the Hacienda heydays.
But the post-industrialist theme has been livened with a seductive new look; burnt purples and oranges, new wooden floor and large sociable sofas.
Over-indulgent, gold-framed mirrors, red lanterns and soft downlighting are modern touches that will be loved or loathed.
However, a new coffee machine, rekindled food service and further plans to expand downstairs into a separate club for live music will no doubt harness future generations.
