Plutonic
FOR two years now Plutonic has been bubbling away behind the scenes, playing host to dozens of small parties throughout Manchester’s more cosier and covert venues.
Moho Live saw them take the big step from small time shindig to big time party.
A unique event in its approach, referring to itself has “a night emphasising Machine Music”. Aiming to explore the more hardware-based styles of dance music Plutonic offers something more to take in than your average long-haired male bouncing around behind the decks.
This evening was no exception to that as headliners Nurseries of Naughtiness brought down a whole load of gear and a whole lot of music.
Only a couple years new to the production and performance scene these lads have caused quite a stir. They have gradually been gaining momentum with a constant supply of big breakbeat-based releases. Single of the week on both Beatport and iTunes, blessing from the John Peel of Breaks, Jay Cunning and others reports having compared them to the likes of greats such as The Prodigy and Aphex Twin.
I was very excited about this performance to say the least!
The brainchild of the outfit, Alastair Dawson was surrounded by hardware centre stage, backed up by lead vocalist, Tony and guitarist, James Cameron.
Shock the foundations
After the standard technical difficulties of live shows, silence was broken by the unmistakable NON sound. Big bounding beats, heavy synths bass lines and the welcome addition of an electric guitar shock the foundations through the Moho sound rig.
Their 45-minute set consisted mostly of their newer material, with a VIP of latest singles Trip It Up and Thug thrown in for good measure.
Also thrown in were a few gems from their early stuff and it was interesting to hear what a progression these boys have made in such a short period of time.
Although a shorter performance than I would have liked, N.O.N. clearly knew how to entertain and kept me moving throughout their set.
If you get the chance I’d highly recommend giving these guys a listen and next time they round through your town, make time for a naughty night out. You won’t regret it.
DJ support in the main room came from the events promoter, Mono, Bane and Man on the rise; Andro. The backroom could be found stocked mostly with Local Talent.
Due to the unfortunate timing of the date – the week before pay day and a Bank Holiday, it wasn’t the busiest of shows but a still a blinder, non the less. Possibly, too soon of a bigger step but definitely one in the right direction.
