Temp/Casual
STEVE Timms’ bitter-sweet drama about the dashed dreams of a group of former student friends three years after graduation is eloquent, moving and completely gripping.
No sooner has Susan (Kate Newton) broken up with aspiring poet Martin (Marlon Solomon) than his poem Alfresco, inspired by her, wins a prestigious poetry prize and he becomes something of a success.
She, meanwhile, is stuck in a dead-end job and ends up a hopeless relationship with another old friend Adam (Leon Jan), whose heartless and useless stand-up comedy routine even steals the fact that the father of their friend Stick (Karl Dobby) is dying of cancer.
Over the six months that the play is set, this doomed quartet cross the paths of other well-drawn characters such as wheadling manager Graham (David Corden), hilarious poetry competition manager Rebecca (Julie Chapman-Lavelle) and the sweetly star-struck Amy (Isabel McArthur).
Well worth a visit, although perhaps not by some of the starry-eyed graduates who’ve been around town recently with their proud parents.
Temp/Casual runs until Sunday, July 26 (no shows July 22/23).
