5:30
IF you've ever had the passenger from hell sit next to you on a train, you'll understand why this disturbing work is so unsettling.
Written by Alistair McDowall, a Manchester Drama graduate, his play last year, Daisies, was nominated for five theatre awards.
This time he fulfils his early promise with a fascinating piece about two strangers who meet on a train.
The writing is powerful, graphic and poetic without being contrived.
Tim, a quiet student is subtly underplayed by Adam Caslin whilst Rob, the aggressive drunk with his bag of tinnies, is superbly played by Peter Ash.
The highs of his terrifying bouts of anger are contrasted with his deep despair as during their journey we hear their stories..
It's dramatic, frightening and comically tragic - hallmarks of a good play.
Sensitively directed by Clive Judd, this for me, proved one of the
highlights of the Festival.
5:30 runs until Saturday, July 25 (no show on July 24).
