Freshers

SET in a student dorm and hopping back and forth over a couple of decades, Steve Pearce’s witty and perceptive new play also has three excellent performances and sharp direction from James Blakey.

Hephzibah – an exceptionally impressive study in amused cynicism from Christine Clare – gate crashes the grotty pad of socially inept and generally rather dopey Miles (Richard Hand) and things develop from there.

Twenty years on, their estranged daughter Scarlet (Laura Danielle Sharp) meets up with dad, both, for reasons of their own, now back at the same uni and with lots of ground to make up.

In the intervening years, Hephzibah has committed suicide and both father and daughter have yet to come to terms with the exact manner of her passing.

It’s gripping stuff, with rather a lot to say about aspects of the human condition. In particular, the scenes between Clare and Hand are highly involving, beautifully done.
