Join Colin: Standing Up and Coming Out at 40
NOT a piece about coming out as a homosexual as the title suggests, but a stand up act featuring Colin Connor as he bears all about his 40 years of life.
The performance was divided into three parts spanning chronologically from Connor’s upbringing in Belfast, moving as an adolescent to Stoke-on-Trent and his discovery of Manchester in later life.
Each section was supported by a ‘mockumentary’ film clip that played on the screen in the background, showing Connor taking viewers on a tour of the three cities.
However, there is an element of narcissism as the film clips play and the comedian also stops to watch, laughing along with the audience.
Add to the fact that they are not funny, and it seemed as if the performance dragged on for an unnecessary extra half hour.
Connor raises more guffaws when doing his stand up live, accounting to the audience about his divorce and how he ended up living with a disabled Asian man - “The IRA and Al-Qaeda united” he jokes.
Ending with a dance to ‘Eye of the Tiger’ complete with audience participation element, the evening had become far too predictable.
Connor’s other contribution to the Not Part Of Festival ‘Meanwhile’ has been more of a success, suggesting that perhaps he should stick to writing instead of performing.
