Gladiator in The House

DESPITE the grey weather outside, it was a good turnout in Salford Art Theatre for the production ‘Gladiator in the House.’

The play told the twisting story of Gallus, a newly appointed magistrate, and his family affairs.

As with many nerve racking first nights, there was a distinct lack of fluidity in and between scenes. Whether it was the music queues which seemed to spring from no where or the cast who would be just too eager to deliver their lines before the last had finished speaking.

Carus gave an exceptional performance though as the dark crooked blackmailer. He captured the mean spirited yet farcical character incredibly well and had the audience very amused on several occasions.

Overall, the second act was a lot stronger both in its structure and comedy value. There were still occasions where scenes seemed a little long winded, but with the amount of twists and turns each character found themselves tangled in, it kept the audiences attention more than ever.

The ending seemed slightly weak, with Gallus setting Carus free, despite the shear amount of laws he had broken. On the whole however, it was a light-hearted production and a fun night out.
