Mick Sergeant

IN a small room above the Lass O’Gowrie pub, amidst what felt like 100 degree heat with not even a whisper of a breeze, approximately 40 people sat wedged hip to hip laughing at an unemployed Geordie's attempt to motivate them out of the recession.

It was the futile nature of these repeated attempts that put the comedy into Lee Fenwick’s character creation ‘Mick Sergeant’; you see, losing his job and his wife and any sense of identity has taken its toll on poor old Mick and his efforts at masking it with hope had the audience in stitches of laughter.

It was a raw, heart-wrenching performance that was so completely immersed in the spirit of Sergeant that it wasn’t at all obvious this was a comic character marching about in front of us.

I loved every minute. From the musical chairs that began as a light hearted party game and ended as a metaphor for society’s failure of people like Mick; to the bitter mockery of affluent property TV presenter Kirsty Allsopp; Lee Fenwick hit the spot as Mick Sergeant - a poignant anti-hero for harsh economic times.
