The Circuit Series: The North will Rise Again

A TALK  based on the book of the same name, The North Will Rise Again was chaired by John Robb and featured the panellists Johnny Jay and Conrad Murray, manager of The Courteeners.
 

Ostensibly debating the importance of Manchester on the world’s music scene, the discussion often felt very self-congratulatory, and very rarely flirted with any controversy.
 

In fact, the more interesting moments of the ‘debate’ instead came via the panel’s personal anecdotes about the likes of Morrissey and MC Buzz B.

Overall all though, this felt like a discussion that had been repeated a hundred times before, and hearing about the Gallaghers’ swagger or the Mondays’ antics was certainly nothing new.
 

The undoubted high point of the evening was the poetry of Mike Garry, at times desolate and bleak but always with a glint of humour in the eye, and his commissioned tribute to Tony Wilson ended the affair on a fitting note.
