The Miraculous Emporium of Amazing Books
MUCH to my amazement (and clearly stupidity), altered books are exactly what they say on the tin; books that have been altered.
And for this latest exhibition by Woodend Artists’ group, they have been altered in the most spectacular and beautiful fashion.
From books with cotton strands exploding out of them, to those manipulated into origami birds and even an old-school bureau (that’s a desk to you and me) covered completely in a Manchester A-Z; you would not believe how many different ways there are to alter a book but they are all here in this exhibition.
My favourite was a piece called Northern Muse which had been created from a book of poems of the same name.
Forming a ballerina
The pages had been rolled up to form a ballerina who was therefore literally covered in words.
I think perhaps I liked it so much because aside from just looking so pretty, it represents what Not Part Of is all about – the combination of different art forms to provide something for everyone.
All in all I was very pleasantly surprised. Altered books - very clever and very cool.
