Kinofilm Festival 2010
TUCKED away beneath Oxford Road railway arches, the Greenroom may not be in plain view, but it’s an obscure place that consistently supports obscure art.
Their latest short film night ‘Kinofilm’ has been a wondrous miscellany – the films range from mainstream romantic comedy to horror and avant-garde sci-fi animation.
In between each showing, audiences are invited to ask questions and debate with the people involved with the making of the movies.
Since members of the audience tend to be film-makers themselves, the talks are often creative advice.
Slurred rants
Fortunately it’s never overly technical for the people who turn up just to watch artistically imaginative films they can’t find elsewhere.
Alcohol bought from the bar is, gloriously, allowed to be taken to the screening room (which, incidentally, isn’t green) though it was hot in there tonight.
By the end, some filmgoers had become so drowsy and drunken that we had to listen over the sounds of slurred rants and tumbling paper cups.
Distracting, yes – but never treated as serious disruptions. The staff assists enough so the afternoon can run smoothly. If only more places would recognise our creative and cultural needs; few promote an interactive exchange between artist and audience like the Greenroom.
