Future Artists: Not part of Media CityYet?

FILMMAKERS from across the north came together for the first ever ‘Future Artists’ evening.

Steve Balshaw of Filmonik and Jon Wojowski of Kino presented an array of films to wet our appetites and get the creative juices flowing such as the beautifully lit Jog and powerful story of Last Train.

Sci-fi reporter Sky Wilson inspired the audience with the beauty of Fan Films.

Hunt for Gollum and Batman Dead End were just some of the clips screened from directors who had created this vision without being paid and it had subsequently driven up quite the industry attention.

Finally, a question and answer session wrapped up the evening as audience members were encouraged to probe talented directors such as Baldwin Li and Simeon Halligan.

The evening certainly stirred and encouraged filmmakers but not without an underlying theme of finances and distribution that bubbled beneath the surface.

Exciting night

Among excellent points from the speakers, they would constantly remind us how difficult filmmaking was.

At times, it was more like they were giving a lecture rather than an inspirational push forward.

In a room of full of filmmakers, the audience were already fully aware of the difficulties of filmmaking. Surely this should have been a night of “lets do it” rather than “hold your horses.”

However a great idea and an exciting night.
