Cirque De City

THE Great Northern Amphitheatre was alive with energy during the ‘Cirque de City.’

At first, the energetic drums of Juba do Leao echoed out across Manchester. The spirited choreography that accompanied the rhythmical music certainly drummed up the audience who didn’t even let the drizzle deter them.

Then came a poetry reading from a nervous Matthew Danley, who took a while to settle into his audience but had some interesting political views, even if half of the spectators were children under the age of 12.

Next Kris Foster, a singer dressed in a leopard suit which was unfortunately never explained.

Frustrating hecklers

His witty songs kept the audience engaged and he even dealt with some frustrating hecklers who soon became bored and moved on.

Overall the 2 hours were full of life if not a little without structure. When the circus acts came on, they performed in the background of the loud drums and it wasn’t clear where the attention should be drawn.

In the end it seemed that the loudest performance won, and I found myself fixated with the ground shaking rhythms and bubbly dancing of Juba do Leao, ignoring any hoop spinning and fire juggling which went on in the behind.
