Chorlton Folk Club

IF one of the aims of the Not Part Of festival is to be inclusive, then what could fit in better than an open mic night?

Every week, Chorlton Folk Club delivers what you’ve always imagined a traditional folk night to be in an appropriately shabby room above a cricket club.

For the festival event , performances came from a diverse group with a mix of styles (and abilities), wielding guitars, banjos, bodhrans and other instruments that defied identification.

What makes the night really appealing is the occasional gem that shines all the brighter for its surroundings – there was some genuine talent on display.

Performers are restricted to one piece, and are introduced by first names, having drawn numbers for their slot, allowing some thirty or so acts.

Non-threatening environment

There is no amplification, so don’t go along if you want to chat during the show. The evening began at 9pm, which seemed like a nice idea until the bar downstairs closed halfway through the event!

This is an unpretentious and non-threatening environment, so aspiring musicians should pay a visit, and if you enjoy a good pint and a pick-and-mix of musical endeavour, then you won’t resent the £1 admission fee.
