40
EVERY big birthday seems to inspire a degree of self reflection and taking stock of one’s life.
40 was no different for Lucy played by Ali Rothwell as she struggled to come to terms with hitting the big 4-0.
Her husband, Ade, the proverbial joker, played by Noel Ross was less than sympathetic.
Following a misunderstanding which served to show how unconnected they had become after some 20 years together, the increasingly excited husband mistakenly thought his wife was asking him to indulge one of his sexual fantasies.
Emotional honesty
This led to him arranging via a swingers website for Johnny, played by Jamie Evans to drop in.
After his wife’s initial shock and reticence she warmed to the idea and after the deed was done, the tables were turned and it was Ade who couldn’t cope.
A night of emotional honesty ensued between the couple struggling to come to terms with the changes that life and age bring which at times had the audience close to tears.
40 was superbly written and powerful in its performance with some wonderful comedic moments. Jamie Evans as writer, director and actor is definitely one to watch for the future.
