The Waiting Line

Sandbar Sandbar

AS we sit snickering at those first uncomfortable moments between hobo Prog and insurance broker Paige, it’s because we have all been there: stuck on a train with a crazy passenger who endlessly tries to engage you in conversation.

Though he is inherently eccentric –bursting into song mid-sentence and construction apocalyptic messages from the daily newspaper- it transpires that Prog’s ramblings aren’t entirely dismissible.

As their meetings become more frequent, Paige is unwittingly drawn into conversation. Matters turn philosophical, and in scenes that are still peppered with understated comedy, the two strangers become locked in a heated debate that is brutally undercut by the revelation that Prog’s capacity for simultaneous insight and delusion is a result of crippling Gulf War Syndrome.

Like the bitter kick that follows the initial sweetness of dark chocolate, The Waiting Line begins with familiar empathy and ends with a sobering reality check.

In the same way that Prog effortlessly drives Paige to the shameful realisation that her life is a sham, Jellybelly’s production leaves us all questioning whether or not it’s advisable to humour strangers on trains…
