Once Upon a Time

BEING a storyteller is the best job in the world, claimed storyteller Helen Stewart and it would be hard to disagree.

Once adulthood is reached it is rare to sit and listen to tales of kings, jesters, servants and WOW’s or Wise Old Women.

It made a refreshing change to take half an hour out of what would usually be a busy Saturday to hear two tales.

The first, the story of a bored king receiving three identical presents which only the storyteller could tell apart.

The second, a tale of a man so desperate for a story, he was parted with a bag of gold.

They were updated for the present day and as with every good story there was a moral and a lesson to be learnt.

The audience had to concentrate because it was easy to become distracted by the background noise of traffic, running water and screaming pre-teenage children running round.

Some may argue that the art of oral storytelling is dying out, but maybe it’s just the way stories are told that is changing with the use of the internet and modern technology.
