Stand Up Thursday: Adam Bloom + Kevin Bridges
BLOOM is one of the unsung heroes of the UK stand-up scene and tonight at the Comedy Store he once again shows why.
His set is a series of brilliantly told anecdotes from his day-to-day life, each one concluded with a perfectly-timed punch line
The intimate surroundings of a mid-week Comedy Store show allows his natural affability to shine through and at times it really is just like having your funny mate telling you stories in the pub.
First up tonight was Kevin Bridges, an aspiring Scottish comedian whose quick wit and perfect delivery could see him going on to bigger things very soon.
Dipping into tales from his childhood and of his beloved hometown of Glasgow, he gets the crowd onside with great ease and ensures that they are primed and ready for the night’s headliner.
Bloom bounds onto the stage, as he always does, and barely stops to catch breath for the rest of his set.
Doing away with the microphone and going for pure lung power, he is clearly revelling in the close-knit atmosphere.
Bloom confesses early on that he doesn’t really have many ‘jokes’.
He trots out the three he does have, including the observation that if you see an emergency on Channel 5 news, you need to flick onto the BBC to make sure its true, and then its straight into the anecdotes.
This has always been Bloom’s forte, and tonight he regales the room with various gripes he has with modern life, including the frustrations of queue etiquette at the supermarket and the ineptitude of some supermarket employees.
Throughout his set, Bloom interacts cheerfully with the audience and seems genuinely excited to chat and banter with them.
It is testament to his natural wit and charisma that the vast majority of his set tonight is drawn from such conversations and is clearly not pre-planned in any way.
At the end of his set, Bloom offers a heartfelt thank you to the rambunctious audience and it feels as if you’ve spent the past half hour being entertained by someone you’ve known for ages.
Bloom has been around for many years now, and for some reason has never truly broken the big time like many of his contemporaries.
There are very few comedians around who are as naturally funny as him however, and this comedy circuit stalwart is still as engaging and enjoyable as ever.
